Membership Has its Privileges (CCEA Express, August 2008)

As you may know, I worked as an attorney for the school district prior to coming to CCEA.  During my tenure there, I had the opportunity to speak to employees on a wide range of subjects.  Employees often asked me if they should join the union.  Without a doubt, my answer then was always, “YES!”  Little did I know then that I would be working for CCEA and seeing firsthand the benefits of membership.

In my opinion the most important benefit of membership is the ability to access specialized knowledge.  CCEA is the recognized bargaining agent for licensed personnel (excluding administrators) for the Clark County School District and as a result negotiates the collective bargaining agreement.  The Agreement provides many protections not afforded by Nevada law.  The Agreement provides that post-probationary employees must be afforded just cause and that progressive discipline must be followed.  Thus, the school district must have a reason for firing and they are exempt from the Nevada’s right to work in this regard.  This is just one of the many articles in the contract that provide protections for teachers.  CCEA focuses on this contract and its staff understands it and how it is applied.  This special knowledge is priceless.

Professional liability insurance is also provided.  If a teacher is sued for conduct committed in the course and scope of employment, the liability insurance kicks in.  In many ways, union membership is like car insurance, you are really happy to have it when you need it.  Life insurance is also provided.  Up to $50,000 in accidental death and dismemberment insurance, as well as, a $150,000 benefit for death due to homicide while actively engaged in your occupation.

By being a member of CCEA, teachers are automatically members of the Nevada State Education Association (NSEA) and the National Education Association (NEA).  Both of these organizations play a vital role in enhancing the work conditions of teachers through legislation.  NSEA along with CCEA, is responsible for legislation at the state level and recently played a key role in bringing gaming to the table to agree to push for a 3% increase in the room sales tax to increase funding for public education.  Furthermore, CCEA and NSEA participated in securing the 4% cost of living raises that were bargained for the 2008-2009 school year, despite the budget crisis affecting Nevada.  The NEA assures that teachers are heard when federal laws are passed that impact teachers and public education.

CCEA is run by its members and, ultimately, that participation is critical in making CCEA the organization it is.  I have the privilege to work with outstanding teachers who have dedicated themselves to improve the working conditions of their profession.

One cannot forget the discounted movie tickets, theme park, zoo, etc. offered to members.  Members take part in this and many other benefits provided by the Association.  Here is an interesting fact, 98% of CCSD administrators are members of their association.  Your supervisors ensure that they are protected.  This is a wise example to follow.
