On Thursday, February 2, the Clark County Education Association hosted a roundtable discussion on public education. The conversation kicked off with a presentation of the Growth Model from a teacher’s perspective. The presentation was conducted by active and retired teachers -- Dr. Chris Leakas, Ann Moody, Erik Smith, Paul Feaker, and Carolyn Stewart -- members of the CCEA Growth Model Task Force.

While several hundred teachers rallied in front of the school district building, CCEA held a press conference at the district’s offices on Thursday, January 26. Ready to take the message to the public were reporters from channels 8, 13, and Univision, as well as Review-Journal and Las Vegas Sun. CCEA President Ruben Murillo, flanked by a group of teachers and community members, unveiled the results of a recent study that analyzed the school district’s budget.
The early transfer period for Title 1 and At-Risk schools will be held from February 6 through February 24, 2012. If implemented, according to the Negotiated Agreement between the Clark County School District and the Clark County Education Association, under the provision of Article 35-2-1, this transfer shall apply only to those vacancies existing in the Title I and At-Risk schools. Realize your innovative ideas
Submit your NSEA Good Idea Grant application by March 9th
NSEA is pleased to offer grants of up to $1,000 to Association members with innovative ideas to help improve education in the state of Nevada. The NSEA Good Idea Grants allow you to make your good ideas a reality, and may be utilized in many ways. Members may use the funding to develop a special unit or project for use with students in the classroom, present a workshop or class for educators, or to create materials or lesson plans for individual or widespread use.
February is Black History Month, and to help you celebrate African-American history and culture, here is a collection of websites that provide educational materials, lesson plans, and other helpful resources.
We all have seen it play out in the news. We have heard about it from friends and family. In Nevada, we had a pretty good taste of this movement during the legislative session and are experiencing our fair share in our contract fight with CCSD. Wish these were isolated instances, but the truth is that the movement to silence employees’ voices, to end workers’ collective bargaining rights, will continue to gain momentum unless we band together.
The CCEA Bylaws Committee is accepting proposed amendments to the CCEA Bylaws. The deadline for submission of the amendments is Thursday, March 1, 2012.
The Clark County Education Association is sponsoring its annual scholarship program for the 2011-2012 school year. Twenty-three (23) $1,800 scholarships will be awarded to well-rounded students who strive for educational excellence. Scholarships will be awarded in the following areas: education (including university students accepted into student teaching/educational internship programs), non-education majors, vocational/technical/trade majors, and culturally diverse/minority students.
The CCEA Awards Committee announced the 2012 CCEA Awards at the January 24 Association Representative (AR) Council meeting. Four categories of awards will be presented. The categories include:
March 2, 2012 is just around the corner and on that day millions of people across the country will come together to join NEA’s Read Across America celebration. This annual reading motivation and awareness program, now in its fourteenth year, calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2—the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss—in the company of a caring adult.
