Wrap Up the School Year With a Strong Finish End of the Year Tips to Go Out With a Bang
As the end of the school year approaches, children and teachers are “on the countdown” to the last day of school.  By May, many students are looking forward to summer and three months free of lessons and tests.  Yet, this may be a bittersweet time for children who will miss teachers and friends.  The activities in this collection will help you celebrate what you’ve learned and ease any anxiety associated with the end-of-school days.

Book Activities for the End of the School Year
Look back at all the great books you’ve shared over the year, and plan ahead for a Summer of reading!

This is a perfect time to reflect on all the great literature you and your students have shared over the course of the year.  As the school year winds down, take some time with students to remind them of the wonderful books they have experienced with you, and encourage them to continue their literary experiences over the summer.  Use some of these activities to get students thinking about the books they have read, and excited about the books they will read over the summer.

• Memory Book
An End-of-the-Year Memory Book is a fun way for students to collect and evaluate all their memories from the school year.  Add a literature component by having students review their favorite books of the year and compile their reviews into the Memory Book.

• Public Library Partnership
Invite the local public librarian to come to your class and give a booktalk.  This is a great way to let kids know about summer reading programs and other free resources they can find while school is closed for the summer.

• Summer Reading Buzz
End the school year with a summer reading kick-off celebration.  Send your students to the Summer Reading Buzz website for book lists, games, chatrooms, and other fun online activities to keep them reading all summer long.  Scholastic will donate a book to charity for every four books a child logs over the summer.

• Book-Alikes
Use the Teacher Book Wizard on Scholastic’s website to create personalized reading lists for each child in your class.  Click on the Book-Alike button, type in the child’s favorite book and reading level, and you will find a list of other age-appropriate books the child may also enjoy.  The lists can be printed for students to take home or they can be e-mailed to parents.

Take advantage of these and many resources.  Visit the Scholastic website — you will be able to download articles, lesson plans and resources, designed for the teachers of today!
